I will be the first to admit that I was never really a fan of cranberry sauce, here’s the thing though, I only had it from a can. I made this cranberry sauce from scratch, it took only minutes and has converted me to someone who loves cranberry sauce.
I put this stuff on my dinner, then also enjoyed it on my leftovers. Absolutely changed the game when it came to those turkey sandwiches.
Ingredients you will need
- Cranberries – super easy to find this time of year
- Water – needed to give the berries something to boil into
- Navel orange – you will need the zest and juice so make sure you have a nice ripe one you can juice.
- Sugar – added sugar helps to create the jelly type texture and counter the tartness of the berries.
- Brown sugar- added sweetness and added flavor
- Cinnamon stick – granulated cinnamon would also work but something about a cinnamon stick that makes me happy.
How to make Cranberry Sauce
1. Combine Ingredients
In a small pot add the cranberries, water, zest, and juice from one large orange, sugar, and brown sugar. stir to combine. The best way to get the most juice out of your orange is to make sure you have a ripe orange but also to roll it with slight pressure on the counter before cutting it in half.
2. Bring to a Boil
over medium heat bring the mixture to a boil and continue boiling until the cranberries begin to split. This mixture will foam up a bit and will look orange from the juice. Once the sugar starts to cook down the foam will reduce. stir occasionally to keep it from over-boiling.
3. Simmer
add cinnamon stick then reduce the heat and simmer on low for 10-12 minutes. You can definitely use ground cinnamon if you wish but there is just something special about a cinnamon stick.
