When I tell you how much I have been craving good oatmeal raisin cookies you would then understand why I was so excited that these turned out exactly how I wanted them to.
Oatmeal raisin cookies can sometimes be a bit controversial. The raisins are where I loose some people. I’ve even hard some talk about how oatmeal raisin cookies are gaslighting chocolate chip lovers.
don’t get me wrong I love a good chocolate chip cookie. even an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. However nothing quite hits that spot like a great chewy, cinnamon enhanced oatmeal raisin cookie.
I made these cookies last night, told my friend I was in the middle of baking them and as soon as she was able to she was on her way to my house and ate probably close to 6 of them in one sitting.
My kids and my husband then proceeded to pile around the cooling rack as I watched one by one all the cookies disappear.
With that being said I would highly recommend two things. One, make these cookies when no one is around, and two, Tell no one!
Ingredients you will need For chewy oatmeal raisin cookies
- Butter- You can use salted or unsalted, either will result in a similar taste. I like to use salted because that is what I regularly have on hand. using a butter substitute like margarine or dairy free butter will work as well.
- Brown sugar packed- I used a light brown sugar, the darker you go in brown sugar will result in a stringer molasses flavour.
- Granulated sugar
- Eggs
- Vanilla extract
- All purpose flour
- Steel cut oats- I personally like the texture of a steel cut oat but rolled oats can be used as well. the texture of the cookie will be a bit smoother.
- Cinnamon
- Kosher salt- table salt or sea salt will work as well.
- Baking soda
- Raisins – this can also be substituted for chocolate chips or even dried cranberries for a Christmassy favour
How to make oatmeal raisin cookies
1. Pre-heat oven
pre-heat oven to 350℉. If you have a convection setting on your oven do not use it. You want the cookies to bake from the bottom.
2. Mix wet ingredients
in a large bowl add softened butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar. cream the ingredients all together until everything is nice and smooth. You can do this by using the spatula attachment in any stand mixer or you can use and hand mixer with the beater attachment. If you are felling strong and into a good workout you can also accomplish this with a wooden spoon. be sure your butter is very soft and room temperature if you choose to do this by hand or you will be in for a good workout.
add eggs and vanilla to the bowl then mix to combine.
3. Add dry ingredients
proceed to add your dry ingredients, flour, oats, cinnamon, salt and baking soda. You can choose to add these to a separate bowl if you wish and pre mix the dry ingredients before you add them to your wet ingredients.
I like to save on dishes so I will usually add the dry ingredients o top of the wet and combine them all this way.
mix everything together until fully combined and ingredients are well distributed throughout the dough.
4. Add the raisins
add in your choice of raisins, mix it all together and set aside. If you are not a fan of raisins you can also use any dried fruit or even chocolate chips.
5. Bake
line your baking tray with parchment paper
using a spoon or a cookie scoop, drop 1.5 tbsp size balls of dough onto the cookie sheet leaving 1 to 2 inches of room between each cookie so they can spread.
bake in fully pre heated oven for 11-15 minutes until top of each cookie is no longer shiny and the edges are slightly golden brown.
6. Cool the oatmeal raisin cookies
allow to cool on cookie sheet for 3 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
7. Hide
hide them from your friends and family because they are way too good to share and they will eat them all way too fast. find a good spot to hide these because if you share they will be gone in no time.

- ½ cup granulated sugar

- 2 cup all purpose flour
- 1½ cup steel cut oats
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- ½ tsp baking soda
- 2 cup raisins

- pre heat oven to 350℉
