chocolate pudding cake

This is one of the many great recipes I found in my grandma’s cookbook after passing. the smell of it baking in the oven is just so amazing. I hope you make this cake soon and let me know in the comments how you enjoyed it.

Ingredients you will need to make chocolate pudding cake

  • Margarine – butter is also a great option if you would prefer to use that instead.
  • Chocolate chips – using baking squares works also. use 1 square
  • Milk – I have not tested it but you could use a milk alternative like almond or soy if you want to avoid the dairy in your diet.
  • Flour- all purpose flour will work perfectly for this recipe
  • Granulated sugar – adds the perfect sweetness and chewiness to the recipe.
  • Baking powder – allows the batter to rise and level as it bakes
  • Salt – brings out the flavor of the rest of the ingredients

topping

  • Brown sugar- creates a rich flavor in the pudding portion of the cake
  • Granulated sugar – added to balance the brown sugar
  • Cocoa powder – creates the chocolate flavor in the pudding layer.
  • Boiling hot water – starts the dissolving process of the pudding part of the cake before it goes in the oven.

Note: yes this recipe calls for a lot of sugar, it is a desert after all. This chocolate pudding cake recipe will serve 4 so it is a perfect dish to serve when having a small group over for dinner.

How to make chocolate pudding cake

1. Pre-heat

Pre-heat oven to 350°f. always allow an oven to pre heat fully to ensure the baking process is seamless.

2. Prepare the pan

Prepare an 8×8 baking dish with spray oil and set aside. Use a dark-colored pan for the best result using these baking instructions, if using glass or any light-colored dish the baking times may vary.

3. Melt Chocolate

melt margarine and chocolate chips in a microwave or double boiler just long enough to melt and stir. if you don’t have chocolate chips you can also use 1 chocolate baking square.

Melted chocolate

4. Add milk

Add milk and whisk together, it will be chunky but that is ok

5. Add dry ingredients

Add flour, baking powder, and salt. stir until fully combined

6. Spread into pan

pour the batter and spread evenly into the baking dish then set aside. The batter will be very thick, that is exactly what we want. spread with a spoon or spatula to evenly distribute around the pan.

7. Mix toping

mix together sugar brown sugar and cocoa powder in a separate bowl

sprinkle on top of the batter in the pan evenly but do not mix. DO NOT MIX!

8. add water

pour boiling water on top and again do not mix. DO NOT MIX!

This part smells so good!

9. Bake

bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes until the edges look cooked but not burned

serve and eat warm, top with ice cream or whipped cream if you wish to add some extra pizzaz
