Chocolate Toffee Cake

This is one of my favourite desserts to make when I need something quick, budget-friendly, and always a win. I call it chocolate toffee cake online for copyright. However, it is more commonly known as “blank” cake (fill in popular toffee chocolate bar) in my home.

The first time I had this cake was when I was about 12 years old. A friend of mine brought it in for a pot luck get together. Well I guess it was her mom that did. She had in in a huge bowl and you could not see the layers but you could see the delicious whipped topping and chocolate crumble.

We were instantly hooked and asked for the recipe. Im sure she handed it out to every other mom there including mine.

Fr Christmas and easter and every holiday after that it was my job to make this cake. As time has passed and I learn new techniques on baking I make this cake less and less. Every time I make it however I want it more and more.

I know when you make this cake yo will agree that it is purely amazing and deserving of every bit of love it receives.

Here’s how its done

Ingredients you will need

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix- make according to box directions
  • Eggs
  • oil
  • Water
  • Chocolate pudding- make according to box directions
  • Milk
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate chips – this was originally done using a chocolate bar that you can smash and make into small pieces. I could not find any when I went shopping last so I used these instead.
  • Toffee chips- use what you like to change the flavour of the desert.

How to make chocolate toffee cake

1. Bake the cake

Bake cake as per instructions on the box

make sure the cake is fully baked by testing in the middle. no need to keep it smooth as you will be crumbling it all up anyway. allow the cake to cool completely

2. Make the pudding

mix milk and pudding mix and refrigerate until it has become pudding. Prepare according to instructions.

if whipped topping is frozen remove it from the freezer to allow it to thaw enough to use. If you are using chocolate bars you can smash them into pieces in the package they come in.

3. Layer the cake

In the bottom of your serving dish layer some of the cooled cake crumbled with clean hands. enough to cover the bottom.

spoon some of the pudding on top to cover without mixing it into the crumbs.

next layer some of the whipped topping. again be careful not to mix it into the pudding layer.

sprinkle the top with chocolate and toffee chips.

repeat layers, cake, pudding, whipped topping, then chocolate and toffee chips. I was able to repeat layers 3 times. you make have less or more depending on how big your serving dish is.

cover and let sit in the fridge for at least 1 hour. allowing the layers to set up and meld slightly.

scoop with a large spoon and serve.
