Whenever I think of fall flavors of course we all think of apples. we go out and take cute pictures at the apple orchards and get all carried away buying so many apples we don’t know what to even do with them. One of my favorite ways to use some of my apples is my making a warm and delicious classic apple crisp.

Apple crisp

serve warm with some ice cream or whipped cream or even cold for break fast the next day (no judgement here) its always a hit in our house.

Ingredients you will need

  • Apples – when at the local farm I bought a basket of apples that were a variety. I’m not sure which ones I had but in the end, it was delicious anyways. use your favorite type of apple for a guarantee you will like it.
  • Lemon juice – helps to bring out some of the natural juices in the apples.
  • Brown sugar – adds some sweetness and creates a sauce in the apples when they bake
  • Cinnamon – a warm spice perfect for fall flavors

Crumble Topping

  • Rolled oats – creates a topping for the apples
  • Brown sugar – adds sweetness to the crumble
  • Softened butter – bunds the topping together and adds a rich flavor
  • Flour – adds volume to the toping
  • Cinnamon – a warm spice
  • Baking powder – used so the crumble does not turn into a rock hard texture after it is baked.
  • Salt – salt brings out the flavors of the rest of the ingredients.

How to make a classic apple crumble

1. Pre-heat

Pre heat oven to 375°f

2. Peel and slice your apples

peel and slice apples pretty thin, I like to vary the sizes for more of a rustic feel and so I end up with some apples that soften and some that still have some crisp to them

3. Mix the filling

add them to a large bowl big enough to mix along with the lemon juice, brown sugar and cinnamon.

fold everything together carefully trying not to break the apples into smaller pieces.

let the apples sit in the bowl while you make the crumble, it will allow them to develop some juices.

4. Make the crumble

add the brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt to the bowl and whisk them all together until well combined.

cube cold but slightly softened butter into 1-inch cubes and drop them into the oat mixture.

Cut and pinch the butter into the mixture. coating all the dry ingredients in butter. When the mixture comes together in a ball easily you are finished.

5. Assemble everything together

pour the apples into a 9×9 baking pan, use w spatula to get all the juice out of the bowl the apples made while they were resting.

top the apples with the crumble, break it up and try not to have too many clumps. if it seems like it is all very high that is ok. when everything bakes it will shrink.

6. Bake

bake in the oven for 30 min

remove and allow to cool a bit before serving.

7. Serve

serve warm with whipped or ice cream, cover, and refrigerate leftovers.
