This recipe for Grandma’s chili for 12 is one that I found in the cookbook she wrote many of her recipes in. It is a very basic chili recipe which is a perfect spot to begin and add whatever you like.

It is the perfect recipe for chilli if you want to add it to the top of any Hamburger, Hot dog, French fries and so much more. This chilli is also great to eat on its own it’s just that good.

This chilli is a great budget-friendly recipe ready to fill your body with good homemade food without weighing you down with a heavy price tag.

Ingredients you will need

  • Ground beef – If you wanted to substitute for no meat you could use chick peas
  • Shortening – you can use lard or butter as well
  • Water – added to give the chili a broth/ sauce
  • Tomato soup – used for flavor, use low sodium or original.
  • Kidney beans – can also add pinto and black beans.
  • Chili powder – use any kind you like depending on your spice level.
  • Onion soup mix – helps to thicken the chili and gives it more flavor.
  • Salt, pepper and any seasonings you like.

  • sour cream

How to make Grandma’s Chili for 12

1. Brown meat and onions

In a large skillet brown ground beef, peel and dice the onion and add to the beef. cook until the beef is no longer showing any pink and the onion has become almost clear.

2. Add Rest of the ingredients

in a large saucepan add cooked meat and onions, as well as tomato soup, drained kidney beans, chili powder, onion soup mix, water, and shortening.

3. Season

salt and pepper to taste. At this point, you can also add any other seasonings you would like to add to create a flavour you like. I added, garlic, parsley, paprika, chili peppers, thyme, and bay leaves. Every time i make this recipe those change based on what I feel that day.

4. Simmer

over medium heat bring the temperature up to a soft boil. turn the heat down to low and simmer for 1 hour.

5. Enjoy

serve with a dollop of sour cream, and sprinkle with cheddar cheese.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 lb ground beef
  • 2 tsp shortening
  • 2 cup water
  • 2 cans tomato soup
  • 2 15 oz can kidney beans
  • 3 tbsp chili powder
  • ½ pkg onion soup mix
  • 2 tsp salt

Optional additions

  • sour cream
  • shredded cheese
  • French bread
  • garlic butter

Instructions

  • in a large saucepan add cooked meat and onions, as well as tomato soup, drained kidney beans, chili powder, onion soup mix, water, and shortening.
  • salt and pepper to taste.
  • over medium heat bring the temperature up to a soft boil. turn the heat down to low and simmer for 1 hour.
  • serve with a dollop of sour cream, and sprinkle with cheddar cheese.
  • slice French bread into 1-inch slices and spread garlic butter on both sides. grill in a frying pan until golden brown.
