Ah yes, green bean casserole has to be one of my favorite side dishes to make this time of year. it is always a hit with our friends and family which unfortunately for me means there is likely not going to be any leftovers.
I have made this dish in different ways but this by far is my favorite way to make it. I do Hope that you make it and love it as much as I do.
Ingredients you will need
- Butter – using real butter is ideal for flavor and cooking, however using another option for any dietary concerns will work also.
- Onions – diced finely, use a cooking onion for best flavor
- Fresh mushrooms – you can of course use a can of mushrooms, that will change the flavor a bit but you will still end up with a great casserole
- Garlic – use pre minced or mice your own garlic
- Green beans – I always use fresh, however when I was a kid my grandma used frozen or canned and it was also delicious. use what you have on hand, if you use canned maybe cut down on the added salt.
- Chicken broth – any brand of chicken broth will do, you can also use a vegetable broth or water with some added stock flavor.
- Cream of mushroom soup – cream of anything will work, I didn’t have mushroom one time I made this recipe and used cream of broccoli instead. it still worked out really well.
- Crispy fried onions – adds crunch and flavor to the top of the dish
- Salt and pepper – always season as you cook
- Grated cheddar cheese – any kind of cheese will do, best results I’ve had so far come from cheddar or marble.
How to make green bean casserole
1. Pre-heat oven
pre heat oven to 350°f
2. Sauté
in a frying pan, melt butter, add diced onions and mushrooms, and sauté until they soften and start to become translucent. Keep the Ingredients in the pan moving, if you find that your pan starts to smoke at all turn down the heat. it is always better to fry low and slow then over do it and burn the onions.
peel and mince the garlic cloves, add to the pan of onions and mushrooms and sauté stirring constantly only until the garlic becomes fragrant. Then remove from heat. do not cook too long after adding the garlic the less you cook the garlic the more garlic flavor will come out of your dish.
3. Prepare the Beans
wash and remove the ends from your green beans. cut in half if the beans are too long to be bite size.
4. Boil the beans
add the beans to a pot with the chicken broth, over medium heat bring pot to a boil and cook for 10 minutes then drain. you can boil the beans in some salted water but adding it to chicken broth gives the dish a dimension of flavor that can not be beat.
5. Mix Ingredients together
add cooked beans and sautéed onion mix to a large bowl. along with 1 can of cream of mushroom soup. folding all the ingredients together until beans are evenly coated in the soup. the mixture will appear a bit thick but that is ok.
6. Bake
spray the bottom of your casserole dish with cooking spray before adding the beans.
bake in the oven for 20 minutes
7. Top then bake some more
remove the dish from the oven carefully and top it with shredded cheese and then crispy onions before placing the dish back into the oven for 10 more minutes.
allow the dish to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. This dish holds heat and will be very hot.
