Halloween marble plain bagels

Straight out of the oven these come out chewy with soft fluffy interior. top them with your favorite bagel toppings, cream cheese, peanut butter and even make home made pizza bagels.

Ingredients you will need

  • Active dry yeast – keep your yeast in the fridge once you have opened it to keep it fresh and eliminate that yeasty flavor.
  • Sugar – to feed the yeast
  • Warm water – cold water wont work and the yeast will not activate, hot water will burn the yeast and you will not have fluffy bagels.
  • Flour- use all purpose flour for this recipe.
  • Salt- adds flavor to the recipe
  • gel food dye – you can use the water base kind also, I like the gel kind for a more intense colour and less of a food dye flavor.

How to make Halloween Marble Bagels

1. Activate the yeast

add water yeast and sugar to the bowl and allow to rest for 5 min until the yeast starts to foam up. Water cant be too cold or the yeast will not activate but at the same time cant be too hot or you will burn the yeast. if you do not see you yeast begin to foam up dump the water mixture and try again. Your bagels will not rise if your yeast isn’t working.

If the water feels warm to the touch but you can leave your hand in there without burning it should be good.

2. Add dry ingredients

add flour and salt then mix until the liquid is incorporated. just enough so the water wont run all over the counter when you start to kneed.

3. Begin kneading

pour the dough out onto a clean dry surface then kneed until it all forms a ball. knead just enough to bring it all together. You will do most of the kneading once the color is added.

4. Divide and color

divide the dough into 4 equal pieces then add a bit of food dye to 3 of them. I used purple, black, and orange and left one white. use any color you would like. If you don’t want color don’t add it and just keep it all in one ball for kneading.

5. Knead

starting with the while piece knead for about 10 minutes until the dough becomes stiff and smooth. then knead the orange, purple then black until the color is well distributed and the dough is stiff. It doesn’t matter what colors you use start with the lightest color first then to the darkest that way if you have any color on your hand it wont transfer and change your intended color.

roll each piece into long tube shapes and lay them next to each other.

6. Marble

Twist, roll, and fold the 4 pieces together (don’t knead) only slightly to marble the colors together not blend them. you don’t need to see too much marbling at this point it will work out with just a but of twisting.

7. Rise

place in an oil-prepared bowl, cover, and place in a warm dry place to rise for 1 hour. the dough should almost triple in size. If your oven have a bread proof setting use that, if not just make sure your dough is not near a cold window and in a warm area of your house.

8. Pre-heat

once the dough has risen preheat oven to 425°f

9. Divide and roll

divide the dough into 8 equal pieces then turn them into balls by folding the sides into the underside of the middle and rolling the ball on the counter. then flatten slightly by pushing down with your hand.

10. Shape the bagels

press your finger into the middle of one of the balls and wiggle until you feel the countertop through the dough. widen the hole by rolling two fingers inside the bagel. make the whole slightly larger than you would think since it will shrink when the bagel rises during cooking.

11. Rest

Place the bagels on a flat surface and cover them to rest for 10 minutes. cover with a clean towel.

12. Boil

fill a large pot with water and salt heavily. Bring the pot to a rolling boil over high heat.

boil bagels in water for 1½ minutes being careful not to over crown the pot. Boil them for up to 3 minutes for a chewier texture.

13. Bake

place bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. leaving enough space in between so they do not touch.

bake in the oven for 20 min then transfer to a cooling rack to cool.
