these Hawaiian rolls are probably my new favorite go-to roll. they are so delicious, easy to make and so pillowy soft I would love to make a bed out of them. I won’t of course but, well…

Hawaiian rolls are just the perfect thing to make for any occasion or meal. if your having a picnic and need many tiny sandwiches perfect! if your having dinner and need a roll for that plate clean up, perfect! if you need some place to sleep at night, well…

this recipe creates a very wet and sticky dough at first. you will have the urge to add more flour, but do not give in to that at all. keep kneading it and it will all start to come together. it will smoot out and come together just give it time.

Ingredients you will need

  • Active dry yeast make sure it is fresh and kept in the fridge to avoid that yeasty taste
  • Sugar – feeds the yeast and helps it activate to create the air bubbles in the bread
  • Warm water – not too hot or you will burn the yeast and it will not work
  • All-purpose flour – leveled off with the back of a knife and not packed in hard.
  • salt – brings out the flavors of all the other ingredients
  • Vegetable oil – adds flavor and smooths out the texture of the dough

How to make Hawaiian Rolls

  1. In a medium-sized bowl add sugar yeast and warm water. water should be warm but not hot. stir slightly and allow to sit until you start to see the yeast activate and bubbles begin to form.
  2. add remaining ingredients and stir with a butter knife until it all starts to come together. once there is no liquid in the bowl, turn out onto a clean dry surface.
  3. start kneading the dough, it will go through a very sticky faze where you will want to add flour. don’t do it! keep kneading and moving it around pulling off your fingers and countertop. it will all come together in about 4-6 minutes and become very soft and smooth.
  4. spray a clean glass bowl with cooking oil and place dough inside cover and allow to rise in a dry warm place until it doubles in size. about 1 hour
  5. remove dough from the bowl and divide it into 9 equal pieces. roll into balls by folding the dough underneath and stretching it into a smooth ball. prepare an 8×8 baking pan with cooking spray. place the dough ball in the pan, cover, and allow to rise again until it doubles in size, about 30 min.
  6. pre heat oven to 350°f
  7. bake buns for 15 minutes until the tops are a golden brown color. butter tops of buns immediately after removing from the oven.
  8. allow cooling completely before serving.

Notes

this dough starts incredibly sticky once you start kneading, but do not add any flour. knead for a few minutes and it will work itself out. it’s messy for a while but when it starts to hold together and doesn’t stick to your hands anymore it is ready to rest and rise.
I made these buns by hand but a stand mixer with a dough hook can be used also. knead until fully combined and is pulling away from the sides of the bowl. you will see it start to smooth out and become a ball. about 3-5 min.
