Lately I’m not sure what it is but bread just isn’t used up a quick and is starting to get stale way to fast. So I decided instead of wasting it I would instead make some homemade croutons! With the cost of groceries these days wasting food just isn’t on my to do list.

Homemade croutons

I have been on a journey of making sourdough bread, learning and failing a lot. As a result we have had more bred in the house then usual. Im not about to throw any out and we cant eat it as fast as im making it.

So I’m always looking for way to save the leftovers after the taste test part is over. So far these croutons have got to be the easiest and tastiest recipe I have made.

This recipe can always be done with any leftover bread you might have. If you have hamburger buns left after a BBQ or the sandwich bread just didn’t get used this time. This is a great alternative to throwing that food in the trash.

Ingredients you will need to make these homemade croutons

  • leftover bread
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Dill
  • Onion powder
  • Oregano
  • Garlic powder

Note:

Keep in mind the seasonings and the measurements are simply there for inspirations. use your favorite seasoning combinations and measure with your heart.

How to make homemade croutons

1. Pre-heat

pre heat oven to 350℉

2. Cut the bread

using a bread knife, carefully cut bread into cubes the size you would like your croutons to be. BE CAREFUL!

add them to a large bowl

3. add oil

drizzle bread cubes with olive oil and gently toss

if there are too many dry pieces left add a bit more oil and toss, do not let your bread soak in the oil you only want the outside of each cube lightly coated.

4. Season

add the seasoning with a light touch, do not just simply dump it all in one spot as that will leave you with a large clump of flavour and the rest will be naked.

add seasonings I have suggested or use your imagination and make croutons with your own flavour combinations.

toss everything in the bowl until all cubes of bread is coated adding more if needed

4. Bake

line a baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone mat

spread the bread crumbs evenly on the baking tray giving them room to toast all around each cube.

bake in the oven for 7-10 min or until golden brown and crispy

5. Enjoy your homemade croutons

allow them to cool before using on your soups or salads
