These soft flour tortillas are so easy to make and take very few ingredients. they are so delicious that my family requests these over the store-bought kind any day.

In this terrible economy, we are all searching for ways to save money and feed our families real food for a good price. which is why I have been on a mission to make just about anything I would normally buy in the grocery store.

one of the first things I learned was how to make these delicious warm, fresh, and soft tortillas. They are such a hit with my family we rarely go with the store-bought ones anymore.

I am confident that once you try these homemade tortillas you will fall in love. they are great for any taco night, burritos and so much more.

Ingredients you will need

  • Flour – all-purpose flour gives us the perfect base for flour tortillas.
  • Baking Powder – helps to create the bubble we see in a good tortilla
  • Salt – brings out the flavor of the rest of the ingredients
  • Vegetable Oil – smooths out the dough
  • Water – binds all the ingredients together

How to make Soft Flour Tortillas

  1. In a mediums sized bowl whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Then add oil and water.
  3. mix until ingredients start to come together then turn out onto a clean dry surface.
  4. Kneed dough until it becomes smooth and has a bit of bounce back when pressing a fingerprint into it.
  5. Roll dough into a short log, about 10 inches long. with a sharp knife slice into the desired amount of tortillas. more slices make smaller tortillas. less makes them bigger. I make 10
  6. Allow disks of dough to rest for 15 minutes.
  7. preheat a large dry frying pan on medium heat, and roll out one tortilla at a time. as thin as you can make it. (they will shrink slightly as soon as they hit the heat so make them a bit bigger than you want them to be)
  8. place tortilla in the pan, watch as bubbles begin to form then flip over. only for a few seconds then remove it from the pan.
  9. place directly into a container large enough to fit all the tortillas. I use a large bowl that has a lid. allowing them to sit in the steam while you cook the remaining tortillas will help them become soft and pliable.
  10. keep them in the container until you are ready to serve.

Notes

In my container, the very first tortilla I make will be on the bottom of the bowl. that one ends up having the most moisture on it since it is where the condensation will concentrate the most. you can use a rack or a paper towel at the bottom to keep the moisture off the bottom tortilla.
