Tuna Noodle Casserole

Tuna noodle casserole seems to have a bad wrap when it comes to sitcom moms and grandmas making it for dinner. Everyone always seems disappointed. Well if you serve this casserole you will not regret it.

Best of all this is a very budget friendly meal, if you find deals on tuna even better but the cost of most of these ingredients are fairly inexpensive and can be substituted to fit your budget and tastes.

Ingredients you will need

  • Butter- can also use margarine if you want a less expensive option
  • Flour – used to make the rue and thicken the sauce in the dish
  • Milk – adds a liquid to dish
  • Smoked paprika –
  • Dill
  • Thyme leaves
  • Black pepper
  • Salt
  • Parsley flakes
  • Frozen mixed vegetables
  • Tuna
  • Fusilli pasta noodles can also use egg noodles

Topping

  • Crushed corn flakes
  • Crushed fish crackers
  • Melted butter
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Parsley flakes
  • Dried chives

How to make Tuna Noodle Casserole

boil salted water then cook fusilli pasta till al dente, drain then rinse with cold water and set aside.

to a medium-sized pot over medium heat add butter and allow to melt

add flour and stir with a whisk constantly, cook flour and butter mixture until it begins to brown slightly

add milk and stir continuously so it does not burn until you can see the mixture begin to thicken.

add seasonings, tuna, mixed vegetables and pasta

fold all ingredients together then pour into a greased 12×9 inch baking dish

set aside and prepare the topping.

pre heat oven to 350℉

Melt butter and mix everything listed under “topping ingredients”

sprinkle over top of the casserole

bake in pre heated oven for 30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

allow to cool a bit before serving.

  • 2 can tuna
  • 5 cup fusilli pasta noodles can also use egg noodles

Topping

  • ½ cup crushed corn flakes
  • ½ cup crushed fish crackers
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp dried parsley flakes
  • 1 tsp dried chives

Notes

for added flavor, you can top the casserole with grated cheese before you add the topping.
