Every good turkey dinner needs an even better gravy to top it off and bring those flavors home. Make this turkey gravy the night before or while your turkey is resting after you have cooked it to perfection. You will be making this recipe year after year I guarantee it.

Delicious Turkey Gravy

Gravy has eluded me for so long I had almost given up. Until I made this one and now I am in love. the thickness is perfect and the flavor is so delicious even the next day and the day after that for all your leftover turkey dinner needs.

Ingredients you will need

  • Butter – used to create the roux at the beginning of the process, you could use a butter substitute if you wish, make sure you pay close attention to the pan as some butter alternatives burn easier.
  • Flour – added to make the roux, you want to cook it until the flour starts to brown a slight bit.
  • Turkey stock – if you are making this gravy ahead of time you can use chicken or turkey broth from the grocery store. if you are making it the day of making sure you use the drippings from the turkey you made and have some broth on hand to adjust thickness.
  • Salt – always season to bring out the flavor of the rest of the ingredients.
  • Pepper – added to create dimensions ins your seasoning.
  • Thyme leaves – you can also use crushed or fresh thyme
  • Poultry seasoning – this seasoning usually is a mixture of thyme, sage, marjoram, rosemary, black pepper, and nutmeg
  • Browning sauce – can be found in any baking isle, the flavor is often considered smokey with a hint of sweet molasses flavoring

How to make Turkey Gravy

1. Have everything ready

have all your ingredients and measuring spoons close by, making gravy requires constant attention or it will clump or burn to the bottom of the pan. I always like to have my husband or kids close by to take over the job of stirring my gravy if I need to walk away to take care of anything else for dinner.

2. Add flour to your cooled turkey stock

whisking constantly add ⅛ cup of flour with cooled turkey stock and set aside, make sure there are no lumps before setting aside.

3. Start your roux

in a medium saucepan melt butter and sprinkle flour over the melted butter begin to stir and from this point on you should have a constant stir in the pan with only slight stops to grab ingredients.

4. Add your broth

Stirring constantly add stock and flour mixture, and continue stirring until all ingredients are combined. Make sure you aren’t using a pot that has a non stick coating if you are using a metal whisk. If you do try to use a rubber spatula or whisk so you don’t ruin your pan.

5. Add your seasoning

Add remaining seasoning and browning sauce. Stir until the sauce thickens. This should not take that long.

6. Adjust for consistency for your turkey gravy

If your gravy is too thick you can add some chicken broth, turkey broth, or water to thin it out. remove from heat when you reach your desired consistency.
