Ingredients

  • 6 large apples
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Crumble Topping

  • ¾ cup rolled oats
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup softened butter
  • ¾ cup flour
  • ½ tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Pre heat oven to 375°f
  • peel and slice apples pretty thin, I like to vary the sizes for more of a rustic feel and so I end up with some apples that soften and some that still have some crisp to them
  • add them to a large bowl big enough to mix along with the lemon juice, brown sugar and cinnamon.
  • fold everything together carefully trying not to break the apples into smaller pieces.
  • let the apples sit in the bowl while you make the crumble, it will allow them to develop some juices.
  • add the brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt to the bowl and whisk them all together until well combined.
  • cube cold but slightly softened butter into 1-inch cubes and drop them into the oat mixture.
  • Cut and pinch the butter into the mixture. coating all the dry ingredients in butter. When the mixture comes together in a ball easily you are finished.
  • pour the apples into a 9x9 baking pan, use w spatula to get all the juice out of the bowl the apples made while they were resting.
  • top the apples with the crumble, break it up and try not to have too many clumps. if it seems like it is all very high that is ok. when everything bakes it will shrink.
  • bake in the oven for 30 min
  • remove and allow to cool a bit before serving.
  • serve warm with whipped or ice cream, cover, and refrigerate leftovers.
